What I've doneWhat I'm like

I am a deeply experienced analytics professional who has developed and instituted impactful strategies and tactics—from conducting analyses to coaching analysts to developing training to process reengineering—within organizations across a wide range of industries that deliver clarity, focus, and business impact.

I have spent the past 15 years being the analytics strategist or the analyst who is brought in to messy situations to plot a pragmatic and effective way forward.

And then I deliver on that charted path.

I bring real-world, hands-on experience both doing the work and growing and educating others:

  • Overhauled the ways of working for the HCP marketing Analytics CoE for a top 10 global pharma company to bring experimentation and analytics into a shared process that led to the brand teams increasing the CoE's budget by 10% YoY
  • Drove a fundamental reworking of how the marketing team at a $30 billion regional healthcare system planned and executed campaigns so that they were using data with confidence rather than simply doing performative charting while executing from their instincts
  • Co-authored Analytics the Right Way: A Business Leader's Guide to Putting Data to Productive Use
  • Created and continue to run the bi-weekly Analytics Power Hour podcast, a top industry podcast that has published continuously since 2015

I am a regular speaker at marketing and analytics conferences across North America, Europe, and Australia on topics ranging from analytics approaches to data visualization and data storytelling to statistical techniques.

I'm recruited to speak based on my reputation for being clear, entertaining, pragmatic, and useful.

Unlike consultancies that have a singular defined framework that they insist their clients contort their needs to meet, I bring deep experience, empathy, and an arsenal of tried and true building blocks to any engagement.

Flexibility layered on top of deep experience and knowledge.

While I have held diverse data and analytics roles over the past two decades, I have left a consistent impression with my colleagues, my clients, and my teams: I will make them laugh while fervently pushing to do whatever I see as the path that will lead them to success.

I've spent much of my career convinced that I lack self-confidence, but eventually realized that, really, I just operate with a high degree of humility. Or maybe I just learned something about marketing and positioning after spending a few decades working with marketers.

I'm probably the most humble person you'll ever meet.

Oh. Scratch that. You see what I did there, right?

I have a tendency to start things in analytics and then have trouble not just continuing to pursue them because they're interesting and seem useful:

At the same time, I'm also known to be someone who doesn't take himself too seriously, which means various long-running (as in... a decade+ in many cases) ideas about me persist:

  • I hate pie charts (the truth: that's an overstatement; they're generally problematic from a cognitive load perspective, but I'm not an absolutist)
  • I thought I looked good with long hair (the truth: absolutely not; I looked ridiculous, and lengthy locks are a real hassle...but the good-natured mockery brought a lot of people joy)
  • I hate hugs (the truth: I'm not a fan—family excepted—but I'm even less of a fan of making people uncomfortable, so I tolerate them)
  • I am an expert in butter (the truth: I had some fun with LinkedIn when it comes to "skills", and the community really stepped up to contribute to the hilarity)

I want my clients to be successful both professionally and personally, and I want them to look forward to our interactions.

I take the work seriously while finding the unexpected laugh.
